In an exclusive interaction with ME, one of the most respected television producers of the Indian entertainment industry, Asit Modi opined that Indian actors should observe self-discipline in order to avoid sexual exploitation controversies in the future. He added, “Only through restrain and professional behavior, the stakeholders of the entertainment industry can further strengthen the brand Bollywood”.
Asit Modi is the promoter of Neela Telefilms which produces extremely popular and a best rated TV show, ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chasmah’ – a serial which has consistently upheld the self-respect of women through well-researched, interesting and creative scripting for the past many years.
Echoing his sentiment, young, talented and a popular director of ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chasmah’ known for his gentle nature, Harshad Joshi said that also by establishing a dedicated ‘grievances cell’ comprising of senior and reputed actors and directors in Bollywood, such controversies can be avoided in the future. He added, “This cell should immediately be asked to intervene in case any one wishes to lodge a formal complain of sexual harassment. The cell should assist the complainant to file a FIR with the police immediately.”
“Sunil Shetty reached out to me and suggested that we should constitute a high-powered committee comprising of senior and powerful people of our industry to look into all such cases of sexual harassment and misconduct,” said actor Sushant Singh who also serves CINTAA or Cine And TV Artists’ Association as its general secretary since May 2015. He added, “CINTAA is resolved to start forming such committee based on ‘The Vishakha Guidelines’. Me-too movement has finally begun, course-correction too shall. Perpetrators must be held accountable by their fraternity.” The Vishakha Guidelines were a set of procedural guidelines for use in India in cases of sexual harassment. They were promulgated by the Indian Supreme Court in 1997.
